Job Title: Producer
Location: London
At 31, Jonathan already has more than half a dozen feature films under his belt as a producer and is recognised as one of the most dynamic, proactive film-makers in the UK. He is acknowledged as a successful, independent entrepreneur within the film sector as well as the wider business community.
Jonathan has just finished producing stylish cannibal chiller ELFIE HOPKINS starring Ray and Jaime Winstone and horror-comedy STRIPPERS VS WEREWOLVES starring Robert Englund and Lucy Pinder. Recently he was Executive Producer on the Danny Dyer thriller 7LIVES and wacky comedy BIG FAT GYPSY GANGSTER and produced horror AIRBORNE starring Star Wars’ Mark Hamill and the romcom HOW TO STOP BEING A LOSER with Richard E Grant and Sheridan Smith, which is in cinemas in November.
Starting as a film journalist, Jonathan was running a TV channel by the time he was 24, before changing gears and moving into feature film production in 2006 with the acclaimed urban horror movie WISHBABY. Partnering with Martin Kemp in early 2007 , he devised the award-winning thriller STALKER as a micro-budget horror project for Kemp to direct. He has since produced such diverse fare as comedy JUST FOR THE RECORD, gangster/vampire genre mash up DEAD CERT and apocalyptic zombie blockbuster DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND, all of which were top ten chart hits in the UK and sold all around the world. After four films with Danny Dyer, Jonathan was the Executive Producer of 2009’s smash hit special interest DVD DANNY DYER’S FOOTBALL FOUL UPS. In October 2010 he won Best Producer at the British Horror Film Awards.
His production company, Black & Blue Films, which he owns with actors Martin Kemp and Billy Murray, is widely recognised as the British market leader in the independent arena. Jonathan’s vision of a modern day Hammer-style mini studio delivering a steady stream of high concept, low budget genre films is now a reality. Black & Blue has now expanded to have its own DVD label launching early in 2012 as well as now also acting as a financier for third party films.
Jonathan also has a ‘Jonathan Sothcott Presents’ imprint with 4Digital Medua bringing the best of international horror to the UK DVD market. Current titles include MINDFLESH, THE FRANKENSTEIN SYNDROME and COWBOYS & VAMPIRES.
Away from film-making, Jonathan is still an occasional journalist and has written about film for the likes of Esquire. He writes a regular column for top UK horror magazine The DarkSide called Confessions of a Horror Film Producer.
